Genes of the Past

Genes of the Past is a scientifically grounded speculative thriller that blends paleoanthropology, gene editing, archaeology, ancient history, and wry humor into a mystery about humanity’s forgotten evolutionary past. As researchers uncover astonishing biological evidence hidden within an ancient hominin fossil, they are forced to confront discoveries that challenge our understanding of human evolution—and humanity’s future.

In the mid-1960s, a remarkably well-preserved hominin fossil is discovered in the Moroccan desert. Named Fat Man, the fossil is estimated to be approximately 550,000 years old. Decades later, DNA and protein analyses at the OMICS National Laboratory in the United States reveal something extraordinary: previously unknown olfactory receptor proteins unlike any ever found in modern humans. Why did humans half a million years ago possess these receptors? What purpose did they serve? And what might they reveal about abilities our species has long since lost?

Although the story is fictional, it is grounded in established science. The genetics, molecular biology, and archaeological methods are scientifically accurate or plausible extensions of current knowledge. Some historical events are factual, while others have been imaginatively woven into the narrative. The storty combines scientific authenticity with an imaginative exploration of humanity’s distant past.
